Artist Bio

Loris Zigon is an Auckland based jazz pianist/keyboardist, composer/arranger and music tutor. Born in Slovenia, Loris graduated in 2014 from The New Zealand School of Music with a Bachelors of Music degree majoring in Jazz. His tutors were some of New Zealand’s most renowned jazz musicians and educators. Loris is happy to travel anywhere in New Zealand for your event or special occasion.

Being a freelance musician ever since, Loris has performed as a solo artist and has led his own projects/bands such as Sam & Loris Duo, The Tiny Tickets and other duo and trio lineups. He’s enjoyed an 8+ year residency with the Big Ticket band at The Lula Inn (AKL viaduct), and has been involved with a variety of other successful groups during his career so far.

A seasoned musician, Loris has performed at hundreds of events and venues for private, corporate and public cliental. Recent solo residencies have included The Grand by SkyCity, Downbeat Restaurant & Bar and the Warkworth Hotel. He also has been engaged in teaching music (jazz and classical) to a broad range of clients since 2020.

Loris predominantly draws his repertoire from the Great American Songbook, jazz/ latin standards as well as popular covers, and sometimes includes original compositions as part of the mix. All selections are presented in great taste with creative spice. Being a trained jazz musician, Loris performs a range and blend of genres which include jazz, Latin (Brazilian and Afro Cuban), blues, funk and pop.

Loris specialises and thrives in two main contexts, background music and concerts. For background music he creates a warm, relaxed and classy ambience, with a comfortable volume that allows guests to easily engage with one another while enjoying his music in the background. Solo concerts put Loris’ talent and artistry in the spotlight where he presents an engaging and memorable programme of music. Both his background music and concerts are tailored to fulfil the requirements of each venue/client/audience.

As a solo pianist, Loris is suitable for: private events, corporate functions, weddings, birthdays, dining events, conferences, hotel lobbies, lounges, restaurants, bars, product launches, vineyards, cruise ships, vintage/gatsby style events, retirement villages, jazz concerts etc.

I have played with Loris before and was at the top of my list when my event brief came through. In April we had our Annual Supporters Function which is an important event for us and one where you want to get things right. I came to him with my requirements, where Loris was super responsive and asked all the right questions to match the brief to perfection, which of course he did. We have a rather large foyer space and I needed a solo pianist to play some classy standards in the background for around 80 people, Loris showed up and stunned me how perfect his levels were, I could be standing on the other end of the room in deep conversation and hear the perfect level of music whilst being able to appreciate his technical ability and jazz knowledge which brings a whole new dimension to his performance. He is a great character and during his performance made me heavily regret not bringing my trumpet with me!

If I could have him playing in our foyer everyday I would!

Loris Zigon has been a consistent core creative at the forefront of Downbeat’s weekend solo piano gigs for quite some time now. This is for good reason as not only is he highly dependable but he has a keen intuition for jazz that is reflected through his eagerness to play. Amongst a solid and in depth understanding of the standards, Loris always finds a way to spice things up with new ideas and colours that intrigue his audiences. As he is kind and interesting by nature, he is a great attribute to Downbeat and thus our doors will always be open to him. In addition, over the years, he has contributed to providing us with various groups he is part of for our Friday band nights, all of which have been well suited to our venue and customer’s requirements.

At Railway Street Studio we recently hired Loris to play for an exhibition opening. He was a pleasure to deal with. Communications with him were efficient and prompt. Loris is thoroughly professional in his manner and his total preparedness. He is courteous, gentlemanly and impeccably presented. In addition he is a very talented jazz pianist with an extensive repertoire to suit any occasion along with an ability to read the room and adapt the music and the volume to suit. He fitted in to our small gallery and was a very pleasing and enjoyable addition to the opening. Many people commented on how relaxing the music was. It was appropriate, never obtrusive and it really put people at ease. I would highly recommend Loris as the perfect performer for any exhibition
